How to Reduce PNG File Size

Seven ways to make a PNG smaller without making it look worse.

1. Compress it with color quantization

The biggest single win for most PNGs. Drop the file into our PNG compressor on the Balanced level: logos, screenshots and illustrations typically get 60–80% smaller with no visible change, and transparency is kept.

2. Resize to the size you actually display

A 3000 px wide image shown at 800 px wastes most of its bytes. Halving width and height cuts the pixel count to a quarter. In the compressor, turn on Resize images and set a maximum width/height or a percentage.

3. Crop empty space

Screenshots and exported artboards often carry wide empty margins. Crop them in any image editor before compressing.

4. Use fewer colors for flat graphics

Icons and simple logos often need only 16–64 colors. Lower Max colors and set dithering to 0 for flat artwork; keep dithering on for gradients.

5. Strip metadata and re-encode losslessly

Editors can embed color profiles, text chunks and thumbnails, and they rarely use the best DEFLATE settings. The Lossless level re-encodes the file with OxiPNG and drops what isn’t needed, usually saving 5–30% with identical pixels.

6. Hit an exact target size

Need it under a limit for a form or portal? Use Compress PNG to 100 KB or type any target in KB. The tool searches for the best quality that fits.

7. Use the right format

PNG is ideal for graphics with sharp edges, text and transparency. For large photos, JPG or WebP is usually far smaller. Our guide to PNG vs JPG vs WebP explains when to switch.

Frequently asked questions

PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Large dimensions, millions of colors (photos) and inefficient encoding from the app that saved it all add up.

Lossless optimization never changes pixels. Lossy quantization changes colors slightly, usually invisibly on graphics. Compare with the before/after slider.
